That being said, I realize that I cannot truly generalize. I identified with this woman so much that her story and hardships resonate within my soul. So maybe I'm wrong. I love this book so much I ordered her other two. This book made me laugh, smile, roll my eyes (in a good way) and just fall in love with Lily.

She is someone you can see hanging out with. She has a healthy respect for the military and someone who is trying to fit in the Military wife role while being who she is, her husband is supportive but it is not always an easy ride.

I also have to admit this is one of the FEW books I bought in hardback. I wanted the version so bad but when I saw it in the bookstore I could not resist (this does not happen often) I was halfway through when the version came out (THANK YOU!!) so I bought that too.. gave the hardback to a friend.. GET THIS BOOK.. you will love it and her!!!!
Following her memoir/travelogue/burlesque history, Strip City, Lily Burana met and married Mike, a historian and active-duty Army major who taught at West Point. Burana, a former stripper, punk, and all-around questioner of authority, suddenly found herself in a new world that seemed to have all kinds of rules she had to learn to follow. She also had to confront a knee-jerk distrust of the military and a hatred of all things twee.

In the course of making a marriage (Mike deployed to Iraq shortly after they tied the knot), figuring out how to fit into a new culture, and learning to love the real Army, not the one she imagined existed, Burana also was forced to confront childhood demons that had long plagued her. She didn't get there without a struggle -- at one point she and Mike separated, both undergoing therapy and trying to overcome intense difficulties. But by the end of the story, Burana has built strong relationships with both her husband and the military, and she has even found a way to use her past as a stripper (a past she often worried would leave her an outcast among the military wife ranks) to bring joy to other Army wives.

Part guide to the unvarnished truth about military wifedom, part personal history, part love letter to her husband, Burana's book is told with wit and grace.
While the majority of purchasers may have chosen this book based on the military theme, that was the interesting but not great part for me. Lily describes depression in a way that anyone who has suffered will appreciate. Her triggers were her marriage, but she puts perfect words to the feelings I and countless others have felt. Her husband the soldier was not the only brave one in this marriage; she was incredibly brave to admit just how awful and devoid of reason clinical depression is. How all-consuming and miserable, and how someone can dig themselves out of the hole. I admire and appreciate this book incredibly, even if I cried while I read it.
I'm adding this review on Memorial Day, which seems fitting. I never thought about this holiday except as a good opportunity to buy linens. Now, after reading Lily's book, I'm acutely attuned to the sacrifices of military members and their families. Even though my own father was in the Navy, I had reductive ideas about who "the real military" was -- my dad was a thoughtful, irreverent Democrat for whom the military was a way to pay for med school, but I imagined that for people who actually wanted to be part of this club, independent thinking was a no-no. In my head, they were all hard-right, sexist, lock-step followers. But Lily's portrait of her husband Mike, and of the military in general, educated me. I Love a Man in Uniform offers a nuanced, sometimes hilarious, often moving picture of a subculture many of us liberals know nothing about. So on this holiday, I say thanks to military families for their sacrifices. And thanks to this book for teaching me.
