This seems more a collection of short stories based on already-created characters in a familiar situation. I am not usually a fan of short stories; it takes a special kind of writer to be effective in short-story-mode. This author is that kind of writer. I found myself tearing up as I got further into the book, and I don't do that very often. I liked the town of Avalon and the people who live there, and I think you would too.
Love this book of short stories centered around the small community of Avalon. The characters are believable and so are the stories. You have Secret Santa. The Bah Humbug club, Neighbors helping each other, the Harmony Seniors, etc Avalon is a very friendly place with a variety of characters. I smiled, laughed, cried reading these stories. I do have a couple more stories to read but wanted to leave my review. This is a great Christmas read I will be enjoying it again next Christmas for sure. Highly recommended.
Well written, clever, and heartwarming stories that will anyone with the spirit of Christmas. I know. I've been down in the dumps having moved with my family to another Country. Even though Christmas is 10 days away it felt like a hundred to me. I decided to take a chance on this book, as I was looking for something that might make me feel more in to the holidays. I was less than 1/2 way through when I felt my heart warm like the Grinch's.
The Author mentions Maeve Binchy in one of her stories and truth be told, and I don't say this lightly because Maeve Binchy is my all time favorite author, Darien Gee has a little of Maeve Binchy's style in her work.
I wasn't familiar with this author or series, so I came into it without any preconceived notions. It is a nice collection of short stories, all slightly related by the town, and the general theme of friendly, helpful people. Each story stands alone, so it isn't easy to build any attachment to a character, or feel comfortably at home with anything. Only a couple of elements were mentioned in more than one story, but they were not key elements, so again - no attachment. However, points for being just the right kind of book to have when you are ready to unwind, and relax with a pleasant story in the theme of all that is good in the world. And if you love recipes, there are some of them included too.
Usually, I'm not one for the cozy, home-like stories. My rare forays into fiction cover mysteries like Clive Cussler's ocean-based tales, old favorites like Agatha Christie or Ian Fleming, or Jim Butcher's Dresden books. Plus sweeping adventure like Tolkien.
But, but, but... This was free, so I thought I'd give it a try.
These tales are much like Christmas candy I had to devour these stories one at a time with several hours in between, or I'd have gotten sick of the sweetness. Despite that, these are the good kind of stories, the kind that (lessons within notwithstanding), gave my heart a little lift. They might be fiction, but they hold out some universal hope of human goodness.
I'm actually contemplating buying one of her other books.
(Speaking of devouring, there are several recipes at the end. They're of the foods mentioned in the stories.)
This is a delightful collection of short stories woven together to form a novel. The book begins and ends in the same setting--a senior living facility--and even though each story can stand alone, it is connected to the others by characters that appear in other stories or references to things that happen in other stories. The structure of the book brilliantly conveys the concept that even though it appears that we live separate lives, our lives are connected with other lives in ways we don't fully comprehend. Each story contains a touching example of the importance of relationships. The writer subtly developed each character and fleshed him or her so that the reader could fully empathize. The author also weaves in the theme that food is often a key ingredient in breaking down barriers and developing relationships. This is an excellent book to read by the fireplace on a cold winter evening, a cup of tea or hot chocolate close at hand. The only reason it didn't get five stars is that there are several glaring typos, added and missing words, and grammatical errors in this electronic book. These things tended to distract me from an otherwise delightful read. I highly recommend this book for your holiday reading.

"An Avalon Christmas" by Darien Gee was a wonderful collection of short stories that took place in Avalon, Illinois. You will find from the read that this is a wonderful town to live in especially during the Christmas holiday season. These stories are of individuals lives and their dealings with the community during 'Christmas, a senior facility, anonymous giving and the Bah Humbug Club.' This author did a wonderful job with giving the reader a read that will lift your spirits of the Christmas holiday. Many of the stories brought tears along with some plenty of laughter. I think my favorite was the Bah Humbug story and I would truly recommend you pick up "A Avalon Christmas" to find out which one you like the best. I would recommend these stories because they are all beautifully written and these stories will be found so very heartwarming. So, with that being said I would recommend you to sit down and read about this special town in Avalon, Illinois.
