I was given this book many years ago in paperback format, but was never able to read the ending because the last few pages were missing. The story of Tessa and Gavin is told in vivid detail, and flows seamlessly through their lives. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys not only a good historical romance but also a very good accounting if California history through the better part of the 1800's ending in 1900. It's a hard book to put down. This book has been out if print for a long time and I was grateful to find it.

The Proud Breed is my favorite book of all time. I first read it about 15 years ago and couldnt put it down, I have since read this book at least 5 more times. It's one of those books that make you fall in love with reading all over again. And Tessa and Gavins journey thru life is a remarkably well told story, I cried, laughed out loud and was sad and missed them when I finished the book

Beautiful story, I re-read it every year, often on vacation!! My copy has been signed by new friends in many countries just for fun. True love set against historical California events of the 1800's. Grab it and read it; you won't be able to put it down. Lots of love without graphic sex scenes.
I read this book over and over and my copy pretty much fell apart. I have never read a book that I wanted to read again until this one. I can honestly say I have never found another book that tops this one. I highly recommend it. It will keep you enthralled the entire read. Outstanding! As you can see I can not say enough about this book!

This is one of my favorite books, if not my favorite of all time. I can only say it is a saga about 2 people who truly love each other and is so worth the time it takes to read it. I have read it several times, have bought this book at least 10 times since I have lent it out to others and not getting it returned. I bought this book for my sister as a gift. It is a book I love to share with others and I highly recommend if you like historical romances.
I read this novel many years ago and fell in love with all the characters. I recently found the paperback at my Mom's house - the type was so little (or maybe I've just gotten old! LOL). It is not available for e-readers, but I decided to order the book to give to my Mom as a gift for introducing me to the novel years ago. It's a great read!
I heard about The Proud Breed from a fellow Outlander fan. The book is centered around a relationship as strong as Claire and Jamie's, but the events surrounding the couple encompass pre-statehood California, the California Gold Rush, the early days of San Francisco, California statehood, the Civil War and the aftermath. The writing is strong and evocative and the characters are real, flawed, believable and relatable. This is a very good book and well worth the effort of finding in old hard-bound format (hint, hint ).
