The Star of Gettysburg A Story of Southern High Tide Joseph a Altsheler 9781491006320 Books

While many films and books have dwelt on graphic descriptions of the carnage associated with this most important battle in the Civil War, Joseph Altsheler presents a measured description of the unbridled violence of the Battle of Gettysburg, in consideration of his younger readers. However, the intensity of the battle, the horrific casualties, and intimate descriptions of the strategies employed in the battle, as experienced by Harry Kenton, the young Confederate soldier, are excellent. The fifth in the Altsheler series, the book continues with the alternating wartime experiences of the two first cousins from the border state of Kentucky as the series continues its march toward the inevitable conclusion of the war. This fact-based series is truly excellent for any reader and "Civil War buff."

Not at all taxing to read and the characters are interesting and the historical characters are also brought to life in an engaging manner.
Very good read
This book told from the fictional perspective of a confederate officer has some good history in it of several battles in the civil war but overly glamorizes soldering and war itself and seems to have a fancy for the days of swords and shields and all romantic notions of war. It's favorite object of praise is Stonewall Jackson, even over Lee and the other Generals. It was fun to read but as a southerner myself, I am a bit put off by this romantic rendition of the southern cause which was a refusal to realize that things do change and things must change for society to progress
I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. They give a unique look at the civil war and the events surrounding them.
One can only imagine how many young boys grew up to love history, reading and researching primary sources as a result of Altsheler's ability to create characters and weave a spell binding story. His Civil War series and his Texas war for independence trilogy are unmatched.
The title implies that the book is mostly about Gettysburg but this is not the case. It is a fairly succinct rendering of the key battles of the civil war from beginning to end. I recommend it to the reader seeking such an overview, but be careful since some points made are not complete.
Altsheler is a very prolific writer of historic fiction, both about the Civil War and other historic events. This book is one of a series that follows two boys, cousins, who are on opposite sides but each of whom serves as an aide to historic high ranking officers. I read this series in the 1950s and it was one of the books I remembered and found for my 12 year old grandson to read. While some of the characters are fictional, many are real, and the accuracy about the battles is quite good. It is wonderful the way the author weaves the fictional story around the actual battles, so the reader can get a pretty good view of what it was like to be a part of that period of history.
