As a pilot, writing this review leaves me a bit conflicted. On one hand, general aviation seems to be less and less relevant as the years go by, and so I'm happy anytime I see someone put their love of flying onto paper. In this sense, I really want to applaud the author for writing this book. On the other hand, this book is rather poorly written and could benefit from a professional editing. The author repeats whole passages almost verbatim in several sections of the book, plus the overall style wanders and is not exactly consistent. This book is a collection of good information, presented in a less than optimal way.That aside, the information in this book is certainly valuable to anyone considering a Trinidad, Tobago or Tampico.
These planes are relatively rare in the US, and many pilots have very limited exposure to them. The book offers a good overview of each of the models, with some interesting timelines and manufacturing notes that will help you understand what you're likely to find inside, given the age or serial number of a given aircraft. All the usual performance information is included, along with some narrative to help newcomers understand a little bit about how these airplanes fly.
Although not presented in a comprehensive, organized way, there's plenty of useful information about the various systems you'll find on any of these SOCATA aircraft. You get a sense of how the various (push-rod) controls work, the landing gear, fuel and electrical systems, and so forth. As someone with limited SOCATA experience, I found these items to be the most relevant and useful part of the book.
The author also takes on some common misconceptions or "urban legends" about the SOCATA airplanes and attempts to refute them in a fact-based way. Of course, some things can't be generalized..."it's hard to find a mechanic", for example, probably depends on where you're based. Still, I found these items to at least give me a sense of things I might want to understand in more depth if I were going to be a SOCATA owner.
The author includes information comparing the SOCATA planes to their obvious competition, but I found this information mostly superficial and lacking in depth. Comparing a Trinidad to a Cirrus or Bonanza (for instance) is a complicated and subjective task that could keep a motivated researcher busy for weeks...distilling this down to a handful of facts that fit on a few pages isn't likely to be very useful. For example, one key consideration for many would be understanding the financials behind maintenance and ongoing operation, and here Mr. Bennett's book provides relatively little guidance. You'll find good maintenance information and data regarding Airworthiness Directives by model, but not a lot of information about what the cost of compliance might be.
Anyway, I don't at all mean to be critical of Mr. Bennett - he's clearly performing a labor of love when describing these wonderful airplanes, and I certainly think he deserves a lot of credit for sharing his knowledge. If you're curious about SOCATA aircraft, there aren't many sources of information, but this book is a good way to get a quick overview.

Great and informative book
I enjoyed reading the book.
I already own a TB20 and I find that the book goes in full depth as to what a potential buyer of a Socata TB model needs to know beforehand. Also good for the casual aviation reader to see the specifics of this special aircraft series.
Excellent source of information for anyone flying or considering owning one of these "sports cars of the sky."
As a pilot to be, I've been looking at and flying various high performance complex single aircraft to find the one that best fits my current and future needs.
There is little information on the Socata TB series of planes and this book has been quite helpful for learning about the aircraft systems, history and differences. Like another reader mentioned, its a great little book and I do wish that a chapter or two had been written about engine management which can be tricky with high performance aircraft and unique.
I found the book to be very informative providing a very nice history and background of the aircraft. The author does a very nice job laying out the history of the aircraft as well as some of the unique features. For those new to the Trinidad, I would highly recommend this is must reading. It's an extremely informative yet affordable book specifically detailing the history of this aircraft.
Having just recently purchased a 1999 Sonata Trinidad, I had obviously already made my decision regarding the aircraft. This book only served to confirm that choice! It is reassuring to know that so many other pilots have found it to be a uniquely capable aircraft, essentially in a class by itself. Bennett's book was well presented as an overview. Particularly interesting was his comparison of the TB series planes to other similar aircraft, as well as the "Common Myths" chapter. Clearly this was a labour of love by a pilot deeply appreciative of the type, and demonstrated his dedication and enthusiasm in getting the word out!
I was in the market for a larger airplane, and had narrowed the field down to the Beech Bonanza and the Socata Trinidad. I found there were fewer sources for reliable information about the Trinidad, since a lot of folks don't know much about them. I was very glad to find this book, which covers how the airplane's systems work and has a lot of detail about the myths (untrue and true) about the plane. I ended up deciding that the Trinidad would work best for my family and now have one, and I've found that the book has been very accurate. For example, as the book notes, parts are not hard to come by at all, but the baggage door is a bit awkward. Two small areas that could be expanded would be to add a section about engine management and a section that covers when (in which exact model year) improvements were made.
